Building up Women in Construction

Out of the many projects I am supporting at the moment, Women in Construction is one of my favourites.

For the past couple of months, I have been working with Bob Noseda, a construction industry expert, and Julia Lee, director of regeneration organisation O-Regen’s ‘Women into Construction’ programme, to see how we can help promote the construction industry to more women in Waltham Forest.

Attracting more women into construction related jobs such as plumbing, engineering, and painting and decorating, is not just a “politically correct” gesture; the latest reports from the Mayor of London’s economics team, calculate that within the next five years, seven out of all new jobs will need to be filled by women if we are not to suffer a severe skills shortage Continue reading “Building up Women in Construction”

Today, George Mitchell school – where I am a governor – launched a major project called “CHALLENGE 2012”.

Challenge 2012 aims to raise enough money to send twelve pupils each, from each of the twenty most deprived countries participating in the Olympics, to school by 2012.

Mr Michael, who is the Minister responsible for Regions, Skills and Productivity, talked to local business owners about the challenges of running a small business and he also sought their views on potential business opportunities involving the 2012 Olympics. Employment Partners’ Plan of Action

As the Leyton ward resident ‘Community Champion’ for jobs it is my role to act as a link between local people and the service providers who deliver Leyton’s employment services. In advance of the second residents’ employment ‘action partnership’ meeting on the 27th of February – which will gather local people’s views and opinions on current employment issues facing Leyton – representatives of all the major service providers – including Job Centre Plus, O-Regen, the ‘Step’ Youth and Construction Project, Team Leyton and the probation service – got together to see how they can work in a more joined up way.
